About Casa de Palmas

I love my new job. I really didn’t think I would ever like another job working for other people. But, maybe it’s because my book is finished, I am having so much fun.
I’m developing the kind of treatment program I always wanted – for women. It’s integrative and it’s individualized. Many programs claim to have an individualized program but that’s hard to do with thirty, forty and more clients. It’s even hard to do with twenty clients. But it’s very doable with seven clients. So thank goodness, there is now a program that is individualized!
This is a non-profit organization so all the profit from the house goes back to this program and The Haven, a center in Tucson for women who have children and/or IV use and don’t have the funds to go to a treatment center. At last I’m not making money with my ideas and hard work for some fat cat at the top of the pyramid. In fact, this is an all women organization – except for the handyman, Sam, and a few board members.
And this beautiful house in the historic area of Tucson is comfortable and cozy. We play music, we support each other, we want each other to succeed. This state of the art treatment is being offered for an affordable cost!
So though I’m still very excited about my book (I love the NY Times review and all the other great reviews) this is a great way to spend my day.
Let me know if you have someone that might benefit from this treatment. You don’t have to live in Tucson.

As a LPC and LCDC, I think your book is really a good read. I haven’t finished it yet but so far it seems you were able to do what many 20 year olds never could…remain professional in what essentially was a war zone (an exciting one but still dangerous territory).
When you read a negative review tell your self what you would say to a client “1/3 is going to love you no matter what you do, 1/3 will be like you and the last 1/3 won’t like you no matter what you do”. Try to focus on the 2/3 because they’re the ones that matter.
IHMO, it never seems like you took advantage of your relationships with the people you knew but that they did abuse their friendship with you once you became their “employee”. Of course, this happens in every field.
I bookmarked your treatment website to share with some of my fellow therapists. The whole situation with managed care got so tedious that I haven’t worked in awhile but I still get together with my friends in the field.
Good luck with your book and think about doing a downloadable update with “all the details”. Forget the publisher and sell the rest of the info directly to your reading public. (One of the other authors I like does that).
Sincerely,
Cristy

Hi there,
I teach at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Social Work (VCU), which is located in Richmond, VA. I am adding your book to my list of recommended biographies/memoirs for the students I teach.
I am about your age, and remember the time you write about well–I never missed a concert that came within a 100 mile radius, and I have my ticket stubs and t-shirts to prove it. Thank goodness I still have my brain cells. That’s what I tell my daughter and my students.
Teaching Social Work is my latest incarnation–(I do not do clinical work–I am too empathetic). Like you, I led a wild and woolly life in my younger days–but, do not forget, Chris, it is those experiences which make us the rich people who we are today. Would you change a moment of yesterday if you could? Not me! Many of my friends talk about the old days, how much fun we had, yada, yada, yada…I like to think that I still have a lot of life yet to live–how about you? Just because my only child is a senior in college, and has plans to move to Japan, does not mean that my life is going to end tomorrow, does it?
I loved your book. Many thanks to you for telling your story!
Keep writing!
